Mexico City, Mexico — The head of Mexico’s Citizen Security says inmates from 12 prisons are responsible for 56 percent of extortion calls made. By the first quarter of the New Year, those phone lines will be blocked.
Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security for the Government of Mexico reported that as part of the National Strategy against Extortion, all federal prison lines will be blocked.
He said from July 6 to November 30, 615 extortionists were arrested in 22 states across the country.

He also reported 102,857 calls were received by the 089 hotline: 77,428 (75%) of which, were for attempted extortion. The remaining 14,575 (14%) were for filing general complaints.
According to García Harfuch 10,854 (11%) of those calls were completed extortions that were referred to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), resulting in 3,684 investigations initiated by the Attorney General Offices in the effected states.
“Furthermore, it was identified that 12 prisons account for 56 percent of all reported extortion phone lines. Consequently, 33 percent of these lines have already been blocked, and by the first quarter of 2026,” he said.
