Injunction leaves new Felipe Carrillo Puerto military base in limbo

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Construction of a new military base in Felipe Carrillo Puerto has been put on hold. The project, which was started earlier this month, lead to protests by Ejidos who said the land being built on belongs to them.

María Candelaria Hernández Solís, the mayor of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, confirmed the halted construction. She says although there have been proposals from the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) to resolve the problem, they will have to wait for a legal resolution.

An injunction has put a stop to the construction of the 200-room military base Sedena began building November 4. That week, Ejidos blocked the road to prevent arriving heavy machinery from entering the land.

Hernández Solís confirmed that access to the disputed land remains blocked until the appeals are resolved. She said she believes the land belongs to the state, not exclusively to the Ejidos or to Sedena. The land in dispute is the former Expo Maya site.

Ejidos blocked heavy machinery November 9 on the grounds they own the land.

“I would like the land where Expo Maya was being held to remain for the people of Quintana Roo because it does not belong to the Ejidos or to Sedena. We would like it to be used to build a market or a park,” she said referring to the area where the military base is set for construction.

“Until there is a decision from the judge, we do not know what will happen,” she added.
