Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The National Workers’ Housing Institute Fund (Infonavit) will begin construction of approximately 18,000 homes in Quintana Roo. The construction of the family units is part of the one million planned by Infonavit across Mexico starting next year.
Octavio Romero Oropeza, the General Director of Infonavit, says a majority of the Quintana Roo homes will be built in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. According to Romero Oropeza, both Cancun (Benito Juarez) and Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) have the largest home deficits in the state.
“18,000 homes of this type will be built here in Quintana Roo. Benito Juárez and Solidaridad will receive 80 percent of the homes. The rest will be distributed among the other localities of the state,” he said.
The announcement was made Thursday by both Infonavit and Governor Mara Lezama. Romero Oropeza says the Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores (Infonavit) will build 50 percent of these units for workers who earn minimum wage. The other half to be offered to low-income families.
Construction of the homes could begin as early as January 2025. He says construction will begin once the company that will be in charge of the six-year project is established, which requires modifying the secondary law of Infonavit so that the institute has the power to buy land, build and rent.
“There will be many housing developments when the land allows it. We think that the first houses will be started in the first months of next year,” he said.
Governor Mara Lezama says the scope of the Housing for Well-being Program promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum includes Quintana Roo. She says 18,000 new homes will be built during 2024-2030.
Initially, 2,340 are set for construction in 2025. Of this total, 8,000 will be for Infonavit beneficiaries and 10,000 for non-beneficiaries through Convai.
