Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Quintana Roo residents will want to keep their sun umbrella handy for upcoming rain. Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says an approaching low pressure channel heading toward the Yucatan Peninsula will bring heavy rain to the region.

The system is forecast to reach Quintana Roo late Saturday generating as much as 75mms of rain in some central areas. Residents along the coast will likely see less rainfall. The SMN (National Meterological Service) is calling for around 25 mms overnight Saturday and into Sunday.
The wet weather is expected to stick into Monday. Quintana Roo State Civil Protections says cold front #42 will affect the state with thunderstorms beginning in the afternoon of May 10 and continue until May 12.
The wet weekend will be accompanied by winds with gusts of up to 50 kms/h in the northern areas of the state. The arrival time of the system and the amount of rainfall will differ depending on the region.
In a public notice, Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo said ATTENTION QUINTANA ROO COLD FRONT #42!

“The approach and movement of Cold Front #42 and the prefrontal trough (low-pressure channel) toward the Yucatán Peninsula beginning Saturday afternoon, May 10, and continuing through Sunday, May 11, and Monday, May 12 will result in the following conditions in the state of Quintana Roo.

“Increasing cloudiness, very heavy rain with intense rainfall (75 mms to 150 mms) accompanied by electrical activity and gusty winds in forecast for storm-prone areas. Due to their characteristics, higher rainfall accumulations may be recorded in some areas.

“Winds will be from the north and northwest with gusts of 50 kms/h along the northern coast of the state, mainly over the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres and Benito Juárez (Cancun),” they reported. “Waves of 1 to 2 meters high are expected.”

Civil Protection recommends boaters inquire at the Port Authority about at-sea activities, follow their instructions and heed any restrictions issued by this Authority.

While cold front 42 will generate rain and thunderstorms, daytime temperatures will not see much of a decrease. Civil Protection recommends residents “maintain precautions for maritime navigation and water activities along the coasts of the State of Quintana Roo and the Yucatán Channel, and also to heed the instructions of lifeguards in beach areas.
