Housing Commission breaks ground for construction of 1,200 homes for underprivileged

Cancun, Q.R. — The head of the National Housing Commission says they have started the construction of homes for the underprivileged. Rodrigo Chavez Contreras, who heads the Commission, says they have broken ground to start building the first 1,200 homes.

The announcement was made with Governor Mara Lezama Thursday from SM 255 of Cancun. The new community of homes is being built on property along Lakin Avenue.

The first 1,216 apartments will be built for single mothers, senior citizens, people with disabilities and those belonging to an indigenous community. Governor Lezama says they are being built for people who would not be able to own a home without social security.

She said that of the 1,216 homes, 80% will be offered by allocation and 20% will be for rent to young students who work.

Homes for people who could not otherwise own are being built. December 18, 2025.

Rodrigo Chávez says the National Housing Commission will finance 5,600 homes in the state of Quintana Roo intended for sectors that do not have social security coverage and without the possibility of owning a home.

A total of 5,600 homes are set for construction and will be delivered to families that have already been selected, he explained.

He thanked Governor Lezama and Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña for their support and backing in developing this housing unit, donating the land, and subsidizing procedures and permits.

The homes will be delivered in May 2026.
