Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says during 2026, high-tech medical equipment will be installed in public hospitals. Until now, she said, this equipment has only been available in private hospitals.
“For a long time this equipment was only available in private hospitals. A 256-slice CT scanner is very precise. Only those who went to a private hospital could access it, with the associated costs,” she explained.
“Therefore, it is our obligation to ensure that public hospitals are at the highest level, that the poorest people can access the best equipment and receive an adequate diagnosis to be treated in a hospital.”
Sheinbaum said the update to medical equipment will be a federal investment of 11.2 billion pesos during 2026.
Eduardo Clark García Dobarganes, the Undersecretary of Sectoral Integration and Coordination of Medical Care Services, explained that the federal purchase of 11.2 billion pesos includes 816 high-tech medical equipment pieces.

These, he said, will be integrated into public institutions including 341 IMSS hospitals, 178 to ISSSTE, 237 for IMSS-Bienestar, 41 for Health Services of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and 19 for National Institutes of Health.
The high-tech medical purchases include 25 linear accelerators, 238 tomographs, 38 magnetic resonance imaging machines, 500 mammography units, five PET-CT equipment, as well as seven gamma cameras, one angiograph and two for brachytherapy.
Zoé Robledo Aburto, the Director General of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), said that between April and May, 67 mammography units, 42 tomographs, 12 magnetic resonance imaging machines and two angiographs will arrive at medical units, representing the largest purchase of medical equipment in the history of the IMSS.
This high-tech equipment helps to perform highly accurate biopsies as well as diagnoses and early detection. He said Cancun is one of the cities whose IMSS hospitals will benefit from the updated medical equipment.
