Government of Quintana Roo opens official investigation into PDC real estate developer for injuries to wildlife

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Quintana Roo State Government has initiated a formal investigation following reports of injuries to white-tailed deer. The investigation is in connection to a real estate developer in residential Playacar Phase II of Playa del Carmen.

Óscar Alberto Rebora Aguilera, the Secretary of Ecology and Environment, reported that May 18 and 19 two incidents related to wildlife were documented. Deer were spotted displaced among the rubble and one was run over and taken to a veterinary clinic with no certainty of recovery.

“These events reveal potential flaws in the rescue and relocation measures that must be implemented in accordance with environmental authorizations,” he said.

Consequently, the State Government, under the instruction of Governor Mara Lezama, has initiated administrative actions that could result in formal sanctions.

The investigation is the result of a real estate developer allegedly exceeding their allowed land clearance by more than 3,000 square meters. The residential real estate development has since been closed.
