Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A two story house that exploded on 43rd Street in the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto Monday was being used to store dynamite. Area residents called for help after hearing the brick building blow to pieces.
The explosion happened Monday around 3:00 p.m. in the Javier Rojo Gómez Colony that was heard by residents several blocks away. Police and Civil Protection were sent to investigate where they learned the house was being used to store dynamite.
The two story concrete home was being rented by a company subcontracted by the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) for Maya Train projects.
According to early information, the dynamite was improperly stored (details not provided). The explosion left only pieces of one back wall in tact. The rest of the house was blown to pieces. Broken pieces of bricks were all that remained and found scattered around the area for meters.
Firemen were also part of the responding emergency team since nearby trees and grass were found on fire when police arrived. Personnel from the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Fire Department and Civil Protection continue to investigate what caused the stored dynamite to explode.
