Feds shut down PDC residential real estate project for environmental statement inconsistencies

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Another real estate development in Playa del Carmen has been shut down by federal authorities. On Wednesday, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) shut down construction on the Marsella IV subdivision.

The residential housing project is being developed by Promotora Residencial. Federal inspectors shut it down after irregularities were confirmed within its environmental impact statement.

Inspectors paid a visit to the ongoing development after a complaint was made by group Urban Cenotes. According to Roberto Rojo, the Director of Urban Cenotes, in the company’s environmental impact statement the developer reported only five wild species in the area when in reality there are more than 200.

The public complaint was filed after the group saw the advancement of deforestation in the area.

“Since they started deforesting, we’ve started seeing wild animals emerge. This not only puts wildlife at risk, it also represents a problem for road safety as recently occurred in Playacar,” Rojo explained.

Federal inspectors placed the closure seals Wednesday after confirming the inconsistencies in the project located in an ecologically sensitive area.
