Dredging of Progreso deepwater port started months after Maya Train connection announcement

Port of Progreso, Yucatan — Yucatan Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena says dredging of the Progreso deepwater port has begun. The announcement was made months after President Sheinbaum said the Maya Train would connect with the port to transport cargo.

The Secretariat of the Navy, in collaboration with the Government of Yucatan, announced the beginning of preliminary dredging and maintenance work at the deepwater Port of Progreso, consolidating the entity as a strategic hub in global maritime trade.

The announcement was made by the head of the Navy, Raymundo Morales Ángeles and Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, who said the event positions Yucatan as a central hub in the global maritime trade network.

Morales Ángeles stressed that this project is part of the vision of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to “strengthen national maritime power through its maritime and port capabilities.”

He said that the modernization and expansion of the port will increase the capacity to receive larger vessels. The project will generate economic benefits for coastal communities, providing development opportunities for the population, especially young people.

Progreso will also become an important commercial, tourist and industrial center that will strengthen ties with the United States.

Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena highlighted that with a historic investment of 7.9 billion pesos, the result of collaboration between the Federal Government, the State Government and the private sector, they are ensuring a positive impact for present and future generations.

From the loading and unloading area of the warehouse on Dock 3, Díaz Mena said that the port, expanded by 80 hectares and with greater draft, will allow the arrival of large vessels and the development of new terminals.

Together with Rear Admiral Víctor Manuel Fernández Carrasco, manager of ASIPONA Progreso, Díaz Mena reaffirmed that Progreso will be one of the six most important strategic ports in Mexico.

“The modernization of the Port of Progreso is the backbone of the Mayan Renaissance, a comprehensive strategy to build a more fair, competitive and opportunity-filled Yucatan. With this project, we will attract investments, generate quality jobs and reduce economic gaps,” he said.

This project involves expanding the port by an additional 80 hectares, increasing its operational capacity to 116 hectares and consolidating its position as the key port in southeastern Mexico. In addition to strengthening the logistics infrastructure, it will boost economic competitiveness by attracting investments and generating quality jobs.

Last year, officials had announced that the finished Tren Maya would connect with the Port of Progreso as a cargo train. The connection would be made via an extension project constructed by the Ministry of National Defense and cost around 35 billion pesos. Studies for the project were started in November of 2024.
