Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Felled large trees and flying sheets of metal were some of the complaints Playa del Carmen officials dealt with Sunday. Extremely strong winds were created with the arrival of cold air mixing with humid tropical temperatures.
Riviera Maya residents braced as the strong winds persisted for most of the day.
Emergency services were called to a home on 14 Bis Street in the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood of Playa del Carmen Sunday afternoon after a large tree fell on an SUV. Municipal workers were sent to the home to cut the tree that left the new vehicle partially crushed underneath.
The fallen tree also became entangled in overhead power lines. For that, CFE personnel were requested to make the necessary repairs to the damaged cables.
Sunday night, CFE was called again after residential reports of sheet metal caught in overhead power lines. Municipal of Solidaridad officials requested the assistance of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) after locating a large piece of sheet metal caught between a set of live cables.
The SPC, who reported briefly on the incident, did not say exactly where in Playa del Carmen it happened, only that CFE were called in and the road in both directions closed while they worked to remove the sheet of metal.
The SPC (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos) of Solidaridad reported briefly on the report.
“Operative elements responded to a report from the C5 for a zinc sheet stuck in a CFE pole, since due to strong winds, it came loose from a house and was left hanging from the electric power cables.
“They cordoned off the area and closed the road in both directions to prevent an accident. The incident was referred to CFE for repair of the damage.”
