Cancun, Q.R. — Car crashes were the theme of the first day of the New Year around the city of Cancun. Traffic was congested along several main arteries of Cancun due to crashes and rollovers.
Cancun Transit were notified of a rollover on Kabah Avenue early New Year’s morning. It was at 5:13 a.m. when police found a gray Ford Escape on its side. The car was left in the middle of the avenue, blocking both lanes.
Debris littered the scene after the car slammed into a power pole. The car was traveling north when the driver hit the pole, breaking it into two pieces. Police had to call in CFE personnel after arriving to find the power pole dislodged. Impact from the hit left the pole teetering over two lanes of traffic.
Cancun Hotel Zone police were left to deal with a single vehicle accident after a driver slammed into a light pole. That accident affected the New Year’s morning traffic in the Cancun Hotel Zone. It was around 8:00 a.m. when reports came in regarding the smashed pickup truck.
Cancun police arrived to find an empty truck. By the time they arrived on scene, the driver had already fled. The single vehicle crash happened on Kukulcán Boulevard at kilometer 16. Security cameras will be used to locate the driver responsible for leaving the scene and destroying city property.
Around mid-morning, Cancun Transit authorities located a heavily damaged city taxi. The driver of the cab collided with a motorcycle at the intersection of Chichén Itzá and Kabah Avenues in Cancun. Two people on board the motorcycle were hurt and transferred to hospital.
Shortly after midnight, Cancun Transit were left to search for a driver who their vehicle on city property after mowing down palm trees and holiday decorations. Cancun authorities have not said if any of the accidents involved intoxicated New Year’s drivers.
