Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun continue to search for the driver of an SUV that was left overturned on city property. What appears to be a single vehicle accident happened shortly after midnight Wednesday.
Transit officers found the SUV on its side at the intersection of Bonampak and Uxmal Avenues near the entrance to Puerto Cancún around 12:30. The black Explorer had been abandoned by its driver.
The driver appeared to have been heading north when he overturned taking a corner. The vehicle is believed to have rolled after clipping a curb at a high rate of speed. City surveillance cameras then captured the SUV mowing down a palm tree and Christmas decorations on city property before flipping over.
Transit found the truck laying on its right side with a destroyed windshield and heavily damaged front end. After having the vehicle towed from the central roundabout, police began to search for the driver seen fleeing on city cameras.
