Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — State and Municipal Civil Protection were on surveillance Monday due to ongoing forest fires. On Monday, a group met to fly over the western area of the city where, according to Civil Protection, fires continue to burn.

On Sunday, a forest fire in the far west of the municipality that was deemed extinguished, reignited. Municipal Civil Protection Secretary Darwin Covarrubias says they do not know why the fire restarted, only that it did. It has since gone out on its own.
The restarted fire was found Monday along with several others during the flyover. Covarrubias says they are working to identify critical points so they be more effective at fighting these fires on the ground. An effective ground battle, he said, will also prevent these fires from spreading to nearby communities.
“To identify critical points and more effectively coordinate ground combat actions, we conducted a reconnaissance overflight of the active forest fires in the western part of the municipality,” he said.

The State Civil Protection Coordinator, Guillermo Núñez and the Municipal Civil Protection Secretary, Darwin Covarrubias, participated in the aerial operation accompanied by area directors. They flew over fire concentration areas to develop strategies to combat and protect nearby communities.

“Our firefighters have been working at full speed and have extinguished several fires in that area. On Sunday, we extinguished one only to have it restart overnight, but it went out again. We do not know the cause of the fires.”
