Civil Protection shuts down controversial LP gas station in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad Civil Protection has closed down an LP gas station in west Playa del Carmen. The city announced the closure Wednesday after area residents protested its construction earlier in the week.

A group of people pitched tents on the outskirts of the property claiming the Tomza gas station was built illegally without permits. The LP gas station, located in the Villas del Sol residential subdivision, has since been shut.

It was built by the Holbox Gas company on Avenida CTM. The Villas del Sol LP Gas Fueling Station includes a 5,000 liter storage tank on a 902-square-meter plot of land. According to government agencies, the station does not have an environmental impact assessment from the Energy and Environment Safety Agency, nor local construction and vegetation removal permits.

Despite that, construction was permitted in September during the last days of the previous administration and completed weeks later. Area residents protested its illegal construction as well as its location, which is near two schools.

The Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters of Solidaridad closed the station Wednesday.
