Civil Protection reports 12 injured in Playa del Carmen highway crash

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Civil Protection says a dozen people received medical treatment after a two vehicle highway crash outside Playa del Carmen. Emergency services swarmed the area north of the city with the arrival of emergency vehicles Saturday.

Police, firemen and paramedics responded to the report of the two vehicle colission near Mayakoba early Saturday afternoon. According to police, a private pickup and public combi collided.

Paramedics from Civil Protection treated 12 injured people along the side of the federal highway. Two of the 12 treated were transferred to hospital.

“After responding immediately, rescue personnel from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters provided emergency medical care to 12 people who were injured in a vehicle accident on the federal highway,” Civil Protection reported Saturday afternoon.

“The incident occurred after a private pickup truck collided with a public service van with the registration number F-647. Upon receiving the report, operational personnel, firefighters, and paramedics responded and provided pre-hospital care to the injured, two of whom required hospitalization,” the Secretary of Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad said in a statement.

Traffic was heavily affected by the early afternoon accident. Motorists passing through the area were at a near stand-still due to the double vehicle crash that also left the highway scattered with debris.

According to early information, witnesses claim the driver of the pickup was weaving through south-bound traffic before attempting to pass another vehicle. In mid-pass, the truck’s wheels hit a curb, causing the driver to lose control and spin out of control. During the spin, the truck collided with the combi. Both vehicles were thrown into the center median strip.
