City spending nearly 20 million on central road repairs

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The city of Playa del Carmen has started a central repaving project at a cost of nearly 20 million pesos. Mayor Estefanía Mercado launched the city center project Wednesday.

According to PDC City Hall, the project exceeds 19.9 million pesos and will directly benefit more than 19,000 residents. Streets have been torn up for repaving from15th South Avenue, where the work began, to Aviación Street.

The City detailed the project at Avenida 15 Sur, from Av. Juárez to Aviación Street, will include leveling, compaction, new asphalt, thermoplastic paint, signs and ramps at a cost of 3.9 million pesos. Approximately 3,200 people live in that area.

Streets in Colonia Centro are also being repaved. The PDC City Hall said roads at 2nd North Street, 2nd North Bis Street and 6th North Street are also part of the project. More than 15,800 people live along these streets. The cost for repaving these areas is just over 15.9 million pesos.

Mayor Mercado said these projects are part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize roads, improve the urban environment and continue building a safer, more humane, and functional city.

“Every peso invested here comes from the efforts of the people. That’s why we return it through real projects, with visible and lasting benefits. Today we take another step toward the Playa del Carmen we dream of: orderly, clean, and dignified for all,” she said.

Accompanied by the Undersecretary of Infrastructure and Public Works, Edgar Zapata, the Mayor explained that these projects are financed with the City Council’s own resources, the result of an honest, efficient administration committed to the collective well-being.

These actions are part of an urban transformation policy focused on people, safe mobility, and the recovery of public space for all. Thus, the Playa del Carmen government continues to demonstrate that when there’s no compromise, money can do the trick, and that transformation is built on actions, not rhetoric.
