City removes more than 1.2 tons of garbage from seabed of Riviera Maya beaches

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The government of Solidaridad has collected more than 1.2 tons of garbage from the seabed. The collected garbage has been retrieved by personnel from Sustainable Environment and Climate Change in the first two months of the year.

According to the Government of Solidaridad, more than 1.2 tons of general garbage and waste has been collected from the water during the seabed cleanup days of Riviera Maya beaches.

Samantha Álvarez, the Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, reported that the priority is to protect and conserve the natural environment as a fundamental part of the public policies established in the Municipal Development Plan (PMD) 2024-2027.

“Beaches are an essential part of our tourist appeal and are considered the best among international tourist destinations, so it is important to keep them clean, not only to attract more tourists, but also to protect the marine ecosystem,” she said.

Álvarez highlighted the four days of seabed clean-up that were carried out during the month of January on beaches 88, Cisne, Petrel and 38, from which 677.89 kilos of general garbage and waste were removed.

That garbage removal included five kilos of broken glass on beaches that have the Blue Flag distinction and/or Playa Platino certification.

Also, in the first week of February, the same seabed cleanup day was carried out on the beach and cenote of Punta Esmeralda and another on Playa Pelícanos, removing a total of 31 kilograms of general garbage and 261.6 kilograms of waste, including broken glass.

This week, a new cleanup was organized on the beaches of Montecarlo and Xcalacoco, where a total of 252.20 kilos of general garbage and waste were collected from the sea. When added to the previous clean-ups, Álvarez says the collected garbage adds up to a total of 1,222.79 kilograms. The waste, she said, is classified, weighed and made available in recycling centers.

Álvarez said that this type of seabed cleanup campaign will be carried out throughout the year to guarantee the certification of beaches with the Blue Flag and Platinum distinctions.
