City fires Cancun Transit officer for accepting bribe during stop

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun Transit officer has been relieved of his position after begin caught on video accepting a bribe. The payoff was recorded by a camera inside a vehicle showing the officer waiting in the front of stopped truck for the driver to arrive with payment.

Once the handoff was complete, the Transit officer is seen getting in the passenger side of the city Transit vehicle before driving off.

In a statement, Cancun authorities said the officer who “engaged in acts contrary to institutional guidelines,” was fired and turned over to Internal Affairs for an investigation.

“The Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) of Benito Juárez informs that in relation to the video disseminated on social networks in which a traffic agent is seen who appears to engage in acts contrary to institutional guidelines, the incident has been turned over to the Internal Affairs Directorate for investigation, with file number SMSCT/DAI/017/01/2025.

“The officer was immediately removed from office while the investigation is carried out and responsibilities are determined. The SMSCyT of Benito Juárez reaffirms its commitment to transparency and service to citizens, without tolerating conduct that contravenes these values,” they reported Thursday morning.

He was the second Cancun Transit officer removed from duty in 24 hours. The first officer was removed from his position after being captured on video physically engaging with the driver of a motorcycle during a stop. That officer is also under investigation.
