During the stop he learned that neither of the women on the motorcycle had a license to drive. The officer then proceeded to take the key from the driver after both women got off the bike and attempted to flee.

The incident was videoed at an intersection in SM 35. Additional officers eventually arrived to assist the Transit officer at which time, both women became physical with police. Both women were arrested at the scene.

Since the release of the video on social media, Cancun authorities issued a press release saying the Transit officer has been removed from his position and that an internal investigation is underway.

In their press release Wednesday, they said “the Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) of Benito Juárez, in relation to a video circulating on social networks, clarifies that the recorded events correspond to an intervention in Supermanzana 35, during which a traffic officer was carrying out his work.

“During the incident, the person who appears in the video tried to evade the police action by trying to leave the place, physically assaulting the traffic officer. The SMSCyT reaffirms its commitment to respect human rights, and any conduct that deviates from the protocols will be sanctioned according to the law.”

The two women involved in the scandal have since been released from Cancun jail. One of the women involved has claimed that the officer who stopped them wanted money, but when she refused, he proceeded to take the key, threatening to tow her motorcycle.

Cancun police are investigating.
