Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) is working on finalizing its internal regulations to incorporate rules for electric mobility. New updates to Playa del Carmen transit laws are being finalized to include electric bikes and scooters.

Raúl Tassinari González who heads the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Playa del Carmen says the new laws will incorporate legal provisions to specifically regulate the use of electric mobility options.
He explained that given the increasing use of these vehicles, it is necessary to establish clear regulations for their circulation in order to guarantee the safety of pedestrians and drivers.
“Through the Traffic Department we are urging electric scooter users to respect the traffic flow, wear protective helmets and slow down. Some scooters ride on sidewalks which poses a risk to pedestrians,” Tassinari said.
He said the necessary technical proposals have already been submitted and the amended regulations are ready for formal submission. These regulations will include guidelines on the proper use of scooters, permitted areas for their circulation and penalties for noncompliance.

The new regulations will be part of a comprehensive effort to improve road safety and strengthen the culture of safe mobility in the municipality, in coordination with the Traffic Department and other operational areas.
In the meantime, the SSC has been stopping people traveling on electric devices to ensure safety. “Your safety on a scooter or electric bike is not a game!
“If you travel around Playa del Carmen on a scooter or electric bike, remember that taking care of yourself and those around you is everyone’s job. Therefore, the Citizen Security Secretariat, through the Traffic and Road Safety Department, continues to reinforce the Move Safe campaign promoted by Mayor Estefanía Mercado.

“We are not here to scold you but to accompany you on your journey. Our staff is already on the streets advising drivers on how to avoid accidents and promote harmonious coexistence.
“Take note of these recommendations:
Always wear your helmet.
Don’t ride the wrong way.
Avoid riding on sidewalks.
Slow down and stay alert.
Follow all traffic signs.”
