City demolishes iconic Señor Frogs after serving visitors more than two decades

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — What was once an iconic building in Playa del Carmen is in the process of being demolished. After more than two decades of serving mostly tourists, the city’s former beachfront Señor Frogs restaurant-bar is on its way down.

The city began demolition on the building earlier this week due to its structural risk. The establishment had notably deteriorated over the years and in recent months, was questioned about the possibility of a collapse.

Hernán González, the Secretariat for PDC’s Sustainable Land Use Planning, explained that there were still people living in apartments and using office space on the second level when the city made the decision to demolish. They were evicted and the building is now being torn down.

“The structural assessment determined an imminent risk, so the demolition was carried out. This is a preventative measure to safeguard lives,” he said.

The beachfront building is located next to the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal. González did not say what, if anything, will be built in its place. The building began to deteriorate after the restaurant moved to a new location along the city’s popular Fifth Avenue.
