Cancun’s Nichupté Vehicular Bridge nearing 80 percent and on schedule for December inauguration

Cancun, Q.R. — The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) says the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge is on the cusp of being 80 percent finished. The 8.8 kilometer-long lagoon bridge is on schedule for a December opening.

SICT head Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina said the bridge construction is 79 percent complete and will be inaugurated in December. The mangrove section of the bridge is already built. Crews are currently working on six kilometers of platforms that span over the Nichupté Lagoon.

“The bridge over the mangrove is now finished. They’re now building the platforms in the lagoon area which is six kilometers long. There are also very few foundation piles left. We already have one of the ramps at the Kukulkán junction,” he said.

Esteva Medina described the bridge as a “complex project” due to the environmental conservation efforts. He said that it is being built without affecting the ecological balance in the area.

Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta acknowledged that the bridge continues construction without delays ensuring its delivery on schedule. “At the Kukulcán interchange we already have one of the ramps, and we will be installing five beams. This is important to mention because it will give us the pace to be able to complete this year,” she said.

The bridge will offer a new access route to Cancún’s Hotel Zone used by 1.3 million residents. It will span a total of 11.2 kilometers and connect the island to Colosio Boulevard and Tulum, Kabah, and Bonampak avenues.

It consists of an 8.8 kilometer-long bridge, a 103-meter-long metal arch, two access interchanges located at Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard and Kukulkán Boulevard, a bicycle lane, pedestrian walkways, bus stops and a modern lighting system.

The bridge will also be equipped with an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) linked to a Command, Control, Communications and Computing Center (C4) to ensure security.
