Cancun taxi drivers refer to union as ‘transport mafia’ after inside murders

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun taxi drivers are calling their union a “transport mafia” after the recent discovery of inside murders. The offices of the Cancun taxi union remain shut after the building was seized Wednesday morning during a police raid.

Several taxi drivers, who did not want to be named, are referring to the union building and what went on behind closed doors as the “transport mafia”. Since the building raid where computers, narcotics and ammo were seized and a torture room discovered, taxi drivers have asked authorities to not cover it up.

Several of the taxi drivers have said that the intervention of authorities is a wake-up call, acknowledging that there are taxi sites around the city that have been hijacked by organized crime to distribute narcotics.

“I hope the authorities do their job well and do not cover up for high-level officials,” one said on animosity. He said there are organized crime members inside the Cancun taxi union who own license plates (plates issued specifically for taxi drivers) and control drug sales like a mafia.

On Wednesday afternoon after the morning raid by the State Attorney General, several Cancun taxi drivers gathered near the union office. According to the drivers, so far, they have not received any official information on where the situation stands.

However, the taxi union, in an official statement, clarified their willingness to collaborate with authorities so that “actions are carried out in a completely transparent manner.”

Dogs were brought in to assist during the early Wednesday morning Cancun taxi union office raid.

The Cancun taxi union also emphasized that the group is not defined by a single person, but is made up of “each and every member who works together for the benefit of the union.”

Taxi drivers say they are hoping to get back to work soon and distance themselves from the recent events which include three inside murders. So far, four Cancun taxi driver union members have been arrested in relation to three inside murders that have taken place since September 12 of this year.
