Cancun police circulate labeled carousels to force city drivers to slow down

Cancun, Q.R. — In a bid to reduce accidents and get drivers to slow down, Cancun Transit has begun circulating carousels. The first city carousel was announced June 23 “with the goal of strengthening road safety and reducing the rate of traffic accidents,” the City of Cancun said in a statement.

The carousels have been random but ongoing around the city of Cancun since Monday. They are headed by the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic with the first operation on Kukulcán Boulevard in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The implementation of this strategy, through the Tourist Police, seeks to ensure that drivers respect the speed limits established in the hotel zone. During the carousel operation, official vehicles operate at a constant speed.

The city police vehicles drive in the center of the road to prevent drivers from being able to pass. The police units carry posters with the speed limits on the back of the vehicles. They lead, driving the posted speed limits and obeying traffic signs, forcing drivers behind to do the same.

According to the Municipal Traffic Regulations, speed limits along Kukulcán Boulevard vary between 30, 50 and 70 kilometers per hour depending on the section. “It’s important to note that during the implementation of Operation Carousel, drivers should not overtake participating patrol cars or units, as they set the appropriate traffic pace,” Cancun City Hall said.

The Municipal Department of Citizen Safety and Traffic urges citizens to drive responsibly, respect speed limits and comply with traffic regulations to prevent accidents and protect the safety of all road users.
