Cancun, Q.R. — The main suspect in the murders of five men found dismembered inside an abandoned taxi has been captured. Julio Esteban “N” was picked up December 20 in one of four search operations lead by police around Cancun.
Since his arrest, local authorities have officially charged him for qualified homicide in the deaths of five. The State Attorney General (FGE) made the announcement Tuesday.
Julio Esteban “N” is allegedly related to events possibly constituting the crime of qualified homicide against five victims, they said. Julio Esteban “N” was considered a priority target of the State’s Crime Atlas, they added.
“The events for which he is being investigated occurred in the last days of January of 2024, when five dismembered male bodies appeared inside an abandoned taxi on a street in the Alfredo V. Bonfil district,” the FGE reported. The taxi the bodies were found in was from Isla Mujeres.
The accused was arrested on December 20 by members of the Interinstitutional Task Force headed by the State Attorney General’s Office in SM 308 during four searches carried out during one of four searches in the Alfredo V. Bonfil, an area outside Cancun.
During the multiple arrests made during the operation, the participating elements seized four handguns, two long guns, as well as numerous magazines and cartridges, in addition to military-style tactical uniforms and helmets, marijuana, cocaine and crystal meth.
The murders were reported to be drug related at the time of the initial discovery in January.
