Cancun, Q.R. — A group of angry boatmen Thursday held a sit-in in front of the ICA office in Cancun. The group say they have not been paid by the construction company since they were hired them to provide transportation services.

The men held a sit-in Thursday in front of construction company Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) due to non-payment for transportation services. The company ICA is constructing the Nichupté Bridge over the lagoon in Cancun. The boat service providers say they have been transporting workers to and from the lagoon platform for months without being paid.
Jesús Cahum, a representative of the boatmen said that negotiations to settle the 12-month debt for personnel transportation services are currently being led by Juvenal Reyes Marrufo, union leader of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) in Quintana Roo.
“They haven’t told us anything. Juvenal Reyes has handled everything but if we see that it’s not producing results, we’ll take other actions directly,” he stated.
He says if they don’t receive a favorable response they could travel to Felipe Carrillo Puerto Friday where President Claudia Sheinbaum is scheduled to visit.
“We know that President Claudia Sheinbaum is arriving and we might go to her event to discuss this matter and present a written document,” he said.

In the meantime, he says the boatmen have already agreed to stop providing ICA workers with the lagoon platform transportation service until they are paid.
