Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — One good thing about Hurricane Beryl is the restoration of beach depth with a bit of erosion reversal. At least three of the city’s main beaches are bigger (more depth) than before the hurricane.
María de Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, the Solidaridad Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, says while official measurements are in the works, at least three beaches have gained depth due to the passing of the hurricane.
She says Playas Fundadores, Punta Esmeralda and Pelícanos are now bigger. The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente Sustentable y Cambio Climático y Zofemat says Beryl managed to reverse some of the beach erosion around the municipality.
“The beaches did not show erosion. We did not lose beach, on the contrary we gained and we have a lot, a lot of sand,” she said regarding the passing of Beryl.
Várguez Ocampo says once the tide goes out, a measurement of the beach bottom will be made to have precise information, however, she said in Fundadores, Punta Esmeralda and Pelícanos beaches, the increase in sand is evident.
