Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities say three people were killed and 11 injured early Friday morning in a three vehicle accident. The accident happened around 6:00 on Tulum Avenue in SM 12 in front of the Galenia hospital in central Cancun.

Paramedics reported three dead at the scene. One person was thrown from a vehicle and killed. A second was found crushed inside one of the involved vehicles, while the third person, a front seat passenger in the taxi, was also killed.
Numerous ambulances along with municipal and traffic police and Cancun firemen were at the scene. According to early information, a private vehicle was attempting to overtake a city combi in order to merge into the center lane when the driver of the combi swerved due to that merge and hit the central median.

The public transport van hit at least one palm tree before becoming airborne and landing on top of a taxi. Two people from inside the taxi were killed. One person from inside the combi died after being thrown through a window.

Cancun firemen reported 11 others were injured and transported to various city hospitals. Two of the 11 transferred to hospital, as reported by Bomberos Cancun, were in serious condition. One of those two has reportedly since died. Death toll figures from the early morning accident could change in coming hours.
The Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Quintana Roo said in a brief statement Friday, “a serious vehicle accident has been reported on Tulum Avenue, Supermanzana 12, in front of the Galenia private hospital.

“Emergency units were dispatched to the area to assist the injured and immediately address the incident. Therefore, the general public is asked to give way to emergency units and avoid driving around the area.”
Since the accident, Bomberos Cancun reported “this morning, a 911 call was received regarding a serious vehicle accident on Colosio Boulevard involving three vehicles.
“Our Cancun Firefighters Urban Rescue team immediately responded to the scene, using specialized hydraulic tools to perform cutting maneuvers and extract people trapped between the twisted metal.

“Following an on-site assessment and support from Cancun Civil Protection and Cancún Traffic, 11 people were reported injured and transported to various hospitals in the city for medical attention. Sadly, three people lost their lives in this tragic event.

“We urgently call on the public to drive with caution, respect speed limits and avoid cell phone use while driving. Every second counts and responsible driving can save lives. Our condolences to the families of the victims. We continue working for the safety and well-being of Cancún. Serve and Protect!”
