Nizanda, Oaxaca — Authorities have confirmed 13 dead and 98 injured in a Oaxaca train derailment Saturday. Police are still investigating the cause of the deadly accident.
According to President Claudia Sheinbaum, 13 people have been confirmed dead in the Interoceanic Train accident. Another 98 were injured, five, seriously. The accident happened Saturday morning as the train passed through the town of Nixanda in the state of Oaxaca.
Several of the cars left the tracks sending at least one rolling down a steep embankment where it was found twisted. Two other passenger cars were also located down the embankment, but without rolling.
“The Mexican Navy informs me that, tragically, 13 people died in the Interoceanic Train accident; 98 are injured, five of them seriously. The injured are in IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as IMSS-Bienestar hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec.
“I have instructed the Secretary of the Navy, the Undersecretary of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior, and the Director General of the Mexican Social Security Institute to travel to the site and personally attend to the families; the delegates from IMSS and IMSS-Bienestar will also be present.

“The Secretary of the Interior will coordinate the efforts. I appreciate the support of the Governor of Oaxaca and his team. We will continue to provide updates,” President Sheinbaum said.
In a separate statement, the Marina said “the Mexican Navy expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident. It also reaffirms its commitment to providing immediate support to those affected, with the utmost responsibility, transparency and adherence to the law.”
The Mexican Navy reported that it deployed hundreds of emergency teams after the derailment of the Interoceanic Train.
“During the search and location operations, the Institution deployed a total of 360 naval personnel, 20 vehicles, four land ambulances, three air ambulances and a tactical drone,” the Marina detailed.
According to Salomón Jara, the Governor of Oaxaca, the Interoceanic Train accident occurred in the community of Nizanda. Authorities clarified that the derailment occurred on Line Z, which connects the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz.

The train was transporting 241 passengers and nine crew at the time of the derailment. An official cause for the accident remains under investigation.
