Association of Tourism Agencies says they are heading back to the table after Tulum airport transport increase

Tulum, Q.R. — The Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (Amatur) says they will request a reduction in airport fees for Tulum transport providers. The news was made by Amatur President Sergio González Rubiera following the reactivation of the 933.80 pesos access fee.

Association of Tourism Agencies says they are heading back to the table after Tulum airport transport increase

Tourist transportation service units to the Tulum International Airport have seen the high fees reactivated after a successful negioation last year to reduce those same fees.

According to the President of the Asociación Mexicana de Agencias de Turismo Receptivo (Amatur), six months ago they reached an agreement to reduce the payments made to the airport by local transport companies.

The agreement reached was 150 pesos per day per for vans, 200 pesos per minibus and 400 pesos per bus. The scheme, which allowed unlimited access per month, was in effect for only six months before the original rate of 933.80 pesos was reinstated.

The recent reinstatement of the exceptionally high fee has created concern among the local tourism sector.

“We took an important step with the reduced tariffs, but unfortunately that advantage lasted only six months. Now we will work to talk again to reach a more competitive agreement,” said González Rubiera.

González Rubiera says they plan to meet with the airport’s managing company to review the rates as well as seek support from state Governor Mara Lezama, who, according to González Rubiera, was the key to reaching the previous agreement.

The negotiation is crucial to maintaining the competitiveness of tourist transport services and avoid an increase in costs for visitors, especially in a strategic destination such as Tulum, where tourism is the main economic driver, he said.
