Approaching system gears down as it nears Quintana Roo coast

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An approaching system that has had its trajectory set for the coast of Quintana Roo for nearly a week has geared down. The system of disorganized showers and thunderstorms has hovered between a low to medium chance of further development since it was located by the National Hurricane Centre (NOAA) last week.

On the heels of its making landfall, the system maintains a low 30 percent chance of further development, however, the NOAA says further development is possible once the system reaches the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The wet weather, whch has been felt across most of the state for the past two days, is expected to pick up again for the weekend with the arrival of the tropical wave.

According to the NOAA forecast Wednesday morning, “a tropical wave is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over Hispaniola and portions of the central Caribbean Sea.

“As this system moves westward, some development is possible when it reaches the western Caribbean Sea and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico late this week or over the weekend.”

Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says for Wedensday, the Yucatan Peninsula will remain with cloudy skies for most of the day. However, “during the afternoon, warm to hot weather is expected with thunderstorms that will produce very heavy rainfall in Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

“Wind from the east and northeast of 10 to 20 kms/h and gusts of 40 to 60 kms/h in areas of Campeche and Yucatan.”

Over the past 24 hours, Mexico’s SMN has reported Cancun with the most rainfall in the state with 47.0 millimeters. They were also reported as the hottest in the state with 33.2C (92F) Tuesday.

More heavy rain is expected this weekend for Quintana Roo with the arrival of the tropical wave.
