Mexicali, Baja California — Two Americans were arrested Friday for trying to enter Mexico with more than $100,000 USD in cash. The pair were taken into police custody and their money seized after a customs search located the cash.
The pair arrived in a truck at the Mexicali, Baja California border from the state of California. They were driving over the border through the “nothing to declare” lane. Their vehicle was given the green light to pass, however, as they entered Mexico, customs agents noticed heavily tinted windows.
Their vehicle was pulled over by National Guard and an inspection conducted by the National Customs Agency of Mexico. During the inspection, agents located more than $104,000 in USD bills.
“The crew identified themselves as American citizens. These people were carrying a bag containing several bundles of bills. After counting them, the amount was $104,008 U.S. dollars, equivalent to more than 1.8 million pesos, which did not have the declaration approved by the Tax Administration Service (SAT),” National Guard reported in a statement.
