American travelers into Cancun International affected by latest winter storm

Cancun, Q.R. — The impact of another winter storm in the U.S. has caused disruptions to scheduled flights between American terminals and Cancun International. So far, more than a dozen flights have been reported either cancelled or delayed.

On January 21, nearly a dozen Cancun flights were affected due to the adverse weather. Of the affected flights, five were canceled United Airlines flights bound for Cancun from Houston. Six flights departing Cancun were also affected. Those flights were bound for Houston, Newark and Washington.

On Wednesday, United Airlines canceled a morning flight arriving from Houston. Several other cancellations have since been added to the list due to the same winter storm. So far, two arriving flights by Southwest Airlines originating from Houston have been added to the Wednesday cancellations.

Several departures by United Airlines and Southwest Airlines for flights to Houston and Chicago have been rescheduled.

Despite the U.S. cancellations, the Cancun International airport has more than 400 operations scheduled for January 22. Later-in-the-day arrivals from affected winter storm areas are optimistically displaying the flights as being “a tiempo” or “on time.”

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service said “a bitterly cold airmass will remain in place for much of the South and eastern U.S. over the next couple of days.” That “significant winter storm” has affected the region from Texas to north Florida.

Winter storm warnings were in effect for Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle. Other U.S. areas hit by the cold weather include the East Coast and the Northern Plains to the tip of Maine.
