Cancun, Q.R. — Land being considered for a new Cancun prison is being donated by the Strategic Projects Agency of Quintana Roo (Agepro). According to José Albert Alonso Ovando, Agepro Director, the land for the new Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) is located in the agricultural area of Leona Vicario.
He says the land is 160 hectares, and if given the green light, will be charged by both the Secretariat of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan) and the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC).
The current Cancun Cereso (prison) was built in 1989 for 982 inmates but has a population of 1,825 people, Ovando pointed out. For this reason, prisoner transfers are constant in an attempt to decongest the Cancun prison.
If the new prison project goes ahead, it will be built on state-owned land outside the urban center, but not so far out that it poses a challenge for family to visit inmates.
He said geophysics and soil mechanic studies are currently being done along with topographic surveys to help refine the project. Ovando did not provide details regarding the new facilities such as its building size or how many inmates it might accommodate.
