Cozumel, Q.R. — Airline Aerus made its connection flight from Cancun to Cozumel Tuesday. The small plane landed at the Cozumel International Airport officially starting the daily service between the two cities.
Starting July 1, the airline will begin their daily Cancún-Chetumal route. A daily flight to Chichén Itzá is also planned. With these new routes, connectivity between the north, center and south of the state is strengthened, as well as regional development, Governor Mara Lezama said in a statement.
Governor Lezama was on the first inaugural flight from Cancun to Cozumel. She was accompanied by the President of the Aerus Board, Filiberto Rafael Herrera Andrés, who stated that it was a historic day for Quintana Roo with the recovery of the route.
Lezama said she appreciated the private investment that contributes to attracting more tourism to the island.
“This route is not only an advance in our transportation offer and the connectivity that we want to strengthen in the state and in the region, but a new tool to promote tourism, unity between our communities and to consolidate Quintana Roo in the heart of tourism and innovation in Mexico,” she said.
Cozumel Mayor Juanita Alonso Marrufo was also on hand for the landing of the first Aerus flight to Cozumel.
She thanked everyone for believing in the destination, for believing in Cozumel. “The presence of companies like Aerus is a sign of the confidence of the private sector to invest in Quintana Roo and Cozumel,” she said.
She added that the decision to have an operations center with five aircraft for the moment, as well as pilots, technicians, ramp and administrative personnel, with a unique private hangar in Quintana Roo, will put Cozumel, as a Magic Town at the center of interest of potential visitors.
Aerus will operate 416 flights monthly around state airports that include Cozumel International Airport, Cancún International Airport and Chetumal International Airport.
Aerus will provide seven weekly flights between Cancún and Mérida in addition to a new Cancún-Chetumal route starting July 1.
