Izamal, Yucatan — A “track mishap” was the cause of a partial Maya Train car derailment in Yucatan Tuesday. A passenger car partially left its track approaching the Izamal station Tuesday afternoon after leaving Cancun.

The “track mishap” happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. as the train approached the station. According to Óscar David Lozano Águila, Tren Maya General Director, train 304 had left Cancun bound for Izamal when the automated track switching system activated.
Lozano Águila described the incident as an “anomaly” that requires technical analysis, clarifying that the incident “was not a total derailment, but rather a track mishap.”

On Wednesday morning during the presidential press conference, he reported that none of the 261 passengers on board were injured. The operator of the train activated the emergency brake and Tren Maya personnel assisted National Guard in the evacuation of passengers.

A second train, 303, was brought in as alternative transportation for passengers to continue their journey, he said. Operations resumed at 5:05 p.m. that same day.
