73 arrests made in first six months of Cancun’s Green Unit illegal dumping patrols

Cancun, Q.R. — Since its start in November, 73 people have been arrested and charged for illegal garbage dumping. Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the city is increasing efforts in their fight against clandestine dumping.

The Prevention Directorate of the decentralized agency Comprehensive Solid Waste Solution (Siresol) Cancun, through their Green Units, has maintained constant surveillance operations, detecting and sanctioning offenders who violate Article 61 of the Civic Justice Regulations, she said.

These actions reflect the commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable Cancun with a better quality of life for everyone, Peralta said.

“Protecting the environment begins with respect for our common environment. We will not tolerate practices that put our ecosystem at risk,” stated the Mayor, who has placed the environmental agenda as one of the priorities of her administration.

She says to date, 73 people have been arrested and fined and 16 vehicles sent to the impound lot for littering on public roads. That littering has ranged from tossing bags of household garbage to large dump trucks unloading construction materials from building sites onto city greenspaces.

In addition to their sanctioning role, Peralta says the Green Units play an important educational role, informing citizens about the legal and environmental consequences of littering in public spaces. This comprehensive strategy seeks to significantly reduce illegal pollution sources that affect urban image and community health.

An average fine of around 8,000 pesos is issued by a Cancun judge for dumping garbage in public spaces.
