Replacement of Cancun overhead powerline project half complete

Cancun, Q.R. — A city of Cancun project to replace old overhead power lines with an underground system is over half complete. Governor Mara Lezama says the 11-kilometer long CFE project along Colosio Boulevard is 60 percent finished.

On Thursday, Lezama visited the site and reported that “the underground cabling of Colosio Boulevard, a strategic infrastructure project in Cancun, is 60 percent complete and will be completed on time.”

The mega-project is being done by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) who is replacing around 11 kilometers of overhead lines with underground lines to avoid power outages in storms.

According to Lezama, the work is being done on both sides of the Boulevard and runs from the Airport junction to Kabah Avenue.

The entire project, she reported, is an investment of more than 320 million pesos.

“The goal is not only to beautify Colosio Boulevard, but also to ensure that in the event of a hydrometeorological phenomenon, there will be no power outages,” Mara Lezama said.

In April, personnel from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) began the dismantling of the overhead power lines along Colosio Boulevard. Authorities have not provided an estimated completion date for the replacement project.
