Public transport drivers in Cancun protest 75,000 peso fine for failure to have 4,500 peso permit

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun transport drivers are protesting being inspected and heavily fined by Imoveqroo. Dozens of upset drivers were outside the Cancun Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) office Wednesday after nearly 20 vehicles were towed in previous weeks for violations.

The drivers found it unfair that some of the fines issued were as high as 75,000 pesos for circulating without a permit, which costs 4,500 pesos. Drivers who refused to pay the fine had their units towed.

On Wednesday, Imoveqroo issued a statement saying their inspection operations are permanent across all 11 municipalities. “The inspection operations will be permanent to ensure that public transport users provide social well-being, tranquility and security.”

Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) said their operations ensure both public and private transport operators comply with the requirements established in the Mobility Law.

Imoveqroo Director Rodrigo Alcazar Urrutia reported that inspections are carried out on all units including motorcycle taxis, cabs and city buses and vans (combis) as well as private transportation vehicles including those from digital platforms.

“With the reinforcement of units and inspectors, Imoveqroo is committed to maintaining these operations permanently to ensure that all public and private transport units operate in accordance with the law, promoting a safe and reliable service for all Quintana Roo residents,” said Alcazar Urrutia.

In a recent Cancun operation the inspection staff checked drivers of all public and private transport vehicles for their overall vehicle condition, current insurance policy and permits.

“Three vehicles were identified that did not have their permit to work and that provide the service on digital platforms. These were sent to the impound lot. At the same time, two motorcycle taxis were transferred to the impound and the illegal tinting was removed from six public transport units,” said Alcazar Urrutia.
