Cancun, Q.R. — A building found used for the cremation of human bodies has been seized by the state. On Thursday, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported on the discovery and subsequent seizure of the building located outside the city of Cancun.
“During a search operation for missing persons carried out in the Tres Reyes irregular colony of Benito Juarez, personnel located and secured a roofless building that was apparently used as a crematorium,” the FGE said in a statement.
The group of police officers were conducting a search for known missing persons when they stumbled upon the building. Inside, police found what they have described as an “oven with charred human remains.”
“Inside the building they found an oven with charred human remains which were secured and made available to the Public Prosecutor in order to integrate them into the investigation that was initiated due to this discovery,” the FGE added.
Authorities have commented that they are looking into who may have been using the building to cremate bodies. In an interview Friday, FGE head Raciel López Salazar said the Forensic Services Unit is carrying out the corresponding analyses to identify the remains that were found inside the building.

He said the FGE is looking into who owns the building, what it was actually used for, if it was used by a funeral home or someone else.
“We are investigating who owns the crematorium, how long it has been operating and what service it offered. There are human remains and some prosthetics, but we cannot yet determine precisely how many people were involved. We are in the midst of a very serious and in-depth investigation,” he said.
“We are investigating whether the place was working with a funeral home or if it was linked to a criminal group. But we are not ruling out any line of investigation. We are working constantly to have a complete overview of this case and to be able to inform the public,” he said.
