Playa del Carmen creates 300 temporary jobs to help ease unemployment

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen city council has wrapped up a temporary hiring spree of nearly 300 jobs they filled to help some families get through tough times.

Ámbar Opengo Ochoa, coordinator of Trabajo y Promoción del Empleo, said the hiring of 300 temporary positions for workers has ended, adding that there is still a waiting list of 100 interested people. She explained that the city created the temporary jobs that will see workers perform duties around the municipality.

The jobs will have a biweekly salary of between 4,000 and 4,500 peso, which was approved by city council two weeks ago. The 300 new employees, with two-month contracts, were assigned to public and general service areas as well as to the Physical and Mental Health department, specifically in the six municipal medical centers. Others were hired to serve Civil Protection and to support the local fire department in fighting urban fires.

Opengo Ochoa said “The intention was, and will be, to help reduce unemployment,” noting that with the exception of the health positions, the only requirements were that applicants be in good health. She says she has also found additional openings for potential candidates in convenience stores and private security companies.
