Cancun, Q.R. — A group of national tourists were rescued after their boat lost engine power. The group made the request for assistance after setting sail from Puerto Juárez and finding themselves unable to return to dock.
While boating around the Cancun Hotel Zone, their engine failed, leaving them stranded in the Nichupté lagoon. Personnel from the Navy of Mexico responded to their request for help due to mechanical failure. Boat Tafil, with eight on board, was located at kilometer six of the hotel zone.
In a statement, the Navy reported rescuing the group during a weekend security strategy. “Through the Interinstitutional Task Force “Benito Juárez”, a group of tourists was assisted in the Nichupté lagoon at kilometer 6 of the hotel zone.
“Maritime authorities received a report through the Harbor Master’s radio center about a drifting boat, so emergency protocols were activated to search for the vessel, thereby providing support to the crew.”
According to the Navy, Tafil was carrying six men and two minors who had set sail from a dock in Puerto Juárez. The group was heading down the canal below the Calinda bridge when their engine failed.
The malfunction left them unable to finish crossing the Nichupté lagoon. The Benito Juárez Harbor Master issued an Interceptor-type jet boat to locate the stranded boat and return it to shore.
All eight were Mexican nationals on vacation in Cancun. Tafil was towed to Puerto Juárez by the Navy vessel.
