Mexican Caribbean receives more than 332,000 over long weekend

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The secretary of tourism says the Mexican long weekend saw more than 332,000 visitors and an occupancy rate of 82 percent for the state of Quintana Roo.

Marisol Vanegas Pérez, Secretaria de Turismo Quintana Roo, reported that the recent March 16th long weekend celebrating the birthday of Benito Juarez saw tourist destinations across the state filled with visitors.

The state official specified that the Mexican Caribbean continued to receive tourists over the long weekend, adding that the main destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Cozumel Island, Tulum, Grand Costa Maya, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos and Isla Holbox, as well as Chetumal, also continue to implement rigorous protocols to ensure the detection, prevention and reduction of risks associated with COVID-19.

She says that in addition to maintaining sanitary security conditions, the Mexican Caribbean must prepare to face the repercussions of the closure of borders. She reiterated that all levels of government continue to apply the highest levels of attention to the COVID-19 situation, adding that it is thanks to these efforts that the risk of contagion for visitors remains one of the lowest in the world. She stressed that all visitors are asked to follow hygiene recommendations issued by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As per the guidelines established by the World Health Organization, the Cancun International Airport has also installed sanitary filters equipped with thermal imaging cameras in Terminals 2, 3 and 4. The Cancun air terminal, following recommendations of Governor Joaquín González, continues to take pertinent measures to mitigate the possible effects of COVID-9 in the state.

Filters are installed and operated by personnel from both the Cancun Airport and International Health who work in coordination to monitor passengers arriving in the city from other countries. Protocols are also being followed at the island entries to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres as well as at other destinations including Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mahahual where sanitary precautions are in place.

The Cancun International Airport continues to operate normally with the Mexican Caribbean remaining open to tourists, however, with rigorous prevention measures against COVID-19. Given the low risk of contagion, the CDC has not recommended changing travel plans to the Mexican Caribbean.

“We kindly invite travelers to enjoy the incredible local hospitality, beautiful beaches, spectacular weather, unparalleled cuisine, as well as entertainment and adventure options. Likewise, visitors are asked to follow the hygiene recommendations issued by the CDC,” added the tourism secretary.
