Land owner facing charges of extortion after threatening tenants with eviction

Cancun, Q.R. — A man accused of threatening Cancun tenants with eviction has been charged with extortion. Investigative Police officers arrested Conrado “N” Tuesday on drug related offences. He is also facing additional charges of extortion for reselling land and threatening tenants with eviction.

The additional charges were laid after his arrest when a woman who claimed the eviction threats filed a complaint against him.

“During the arrest of this individual, carried out on Tules Avenue and Chac Mool in this city, 30 bags of dried, green marijuana-like weed were found on him,” police said.

After his arrest, one of his victims filed a complaint against him for repeatadly requesting money and threatening her with eviction if she did not pay.

“According to a complaint filed by one of the victims, the suspect reportedly requested 15,000 pesos three and a half years ago for land. Later, he demanded 2,000 pesos for supervision, surveillance, and surveying.

“Some time later, the victim was asked to pay 11,500 pesos for the installation of street lighting and an additional 4,000 pesos to provide electricity to her lot. Currently, she is being forced to pay 2,000 pesos monthly for security purposes. If she refuses, she is threatened with eviction,” police said.

“Initial investigations link Conrado “N” as the person responsible for selling, reselling and controlling the invasion zone identified as Colonia Benito Juárez which consists of 1,600 lots. Access to this area is blocked and controlled by the currently detained individual.”
