Judicial workers protest reform in the Cancun Hotel Zone

Cancun, Q.R. — Employees from the Judicial Branch held a demonstration Monday morning in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The group demonstrated outside the American Consulate at kilometer 13 of the zone in protest of upcoming changes.

The demonstration started around 11:00 a.m. and was led by Isaac Chi Flores, the General Secretary of the Union of Workers of the Judicial Branch of the Federation in Cancun.

The group of workers gathered to protest the Judicial Reform that changes how judicial positions will be filled next year.

Police became involved in the Monday morning demonstration when some of the protestors stepped out onto Kukulcán Boulevard blocking lanes of traffic. The demonstration in the Cancun Hotel Zone ended peacefully as the group moved on to other venues in the city to continue their protest.

In September, Mexico’s Senate approved President López Obrador’s reform of the Judicial Branch. The reform is one of the most controversial reforms of recent years since with the upcoming change, the election of ministers, judges and magistrates will be done through popular vote.
