Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The municipality of Isla Mujeres has counted 37 sea turtle nests so far this season. Of the nests located, 26 are loggerhead, seven white and four hawksbill that contain more than 4,300 eggs.
All 37 nests are currently under protection by volunteers of the Sea Turtle Conservation Program.
In a statement, the Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde reported “ The Municipality of Isla Mujeres continues with the firm commitment to preserve and safeguard sea turtles in the current nesting season, which began on May 15 and ends on October 15, through the Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program.
“The Directorate of Environment and Ecology of Isla Mujeres reported that a total of 37 sea turtle nests have been protected so far, with the help of the Isla Mujeres Turtle Camp, made up of volunteers and staff of the agency.
“The numbers detail that 26 Loggerhead Turtle nests, 7 White Turtle nests, and 4 Hawksbill Turtle nests are currently being protected.
“In addition, so far this season, which began in May, 4,313 eggs of these species have been protected with 2,968 eggs of the Loggerhead Turtle, 783 of the White Turtle and 562 of the Hawksbill Turtle.
“The work of the Turtle Camp is essential for the conservation of sea turtles in Isla Mujeres,” Atenea Gómez said.
“Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and collaborators, thousands of sea turtle hatchlings have been released in recent years.
“The agency shared that so far there have been no hatchlings released, however, they point out that in the coming weeks there will be a report of the four species that are on the beaches of the municipality.”
