Cancun, Q.R. — A female anteater remains in veterinary care after being found injured in the Cancun Hotel Zone Sunday. City ecology personnel, along with firemen, responded after a report of the injured animal in a hotel green area.
The General Directorate of Ecology, in collaboration with the Fire Department of Cancún, rescued the injured anteater from a hotel property at kilometer 14.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard.
The anteater was transferred to the Directorate of Animal Protection and Welfare, where it continues to receives specialized veterinary care.
Fernando Haro Salinas, the Director of the General Directorate of Ecology, led the rescue operation after receiving a report from hotel staff. He said the animal (Tamandua mexicana) which weighs 4.2 kilograms, was found with lacerations on its tail and a wounded left eye that required specialized treatment.
The Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has also joined in the monitoring and follow-up of her condition to prepare for her eventual release into the wild.
The anteater is listed as an endangered species according to NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.
