ICA begins installation of Nichupté Lagoon bridge arch

Cancun, Q.R. — Construction company ICA Mexico says they have begun to install the arch in the bridge over the Nichupté Lagoon in Cancun. The section left open over the open water is now being closed by, what will be, the arch.

ICA says they began the arch installation on the 101 meter long cable-stayed bridge November 15.

“We share photographs of the Nichupté vehicular bridge arch section, which will connect the hotel zone of Cancun with Kukulkan Boulevard, facilitating access to the city and tourist centers.

“The work will have a cable-stayed bridge 101 meters long and 15 meters wide, manufactured at the HOLPRE Atitalaquia Plant, to cross a cavern 67 meters in diameter and more than 200 meters deep.

“At 18.4 meters above sea level and weighing 595 tons, the structure has ASTM A572 Gr 50 structural steel and is made up of 22 metal voussoirs weighing 237 tons and 6 metal beams weighing 202 tons,” the company explained.

According to the Secretariat for Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedetus), Armando Lara De Nigris, the bridge is 71 percent complete and is anticipated to be operational in early 2025.
