Five on board fishing boat not heard from since Cancun departure found alive

Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: Five fishermen who set sail from Cancun Friday morning have been reported missing. The nautical community has requested public assistance in locating the 28-foot boat Jigging.

According to available information, Jigging left Cancun at 5:00 a.m. Friday with five on board. The captain and four crew were heading for a day of fishing in the Arrowsmith Basin.

The last known sighting of the boat was around 4:00 p.m. on the shallows and was reported heading further south. Family and friends of the fishermen have not heard from them since.

Jigging is a 28-foot Hydrasport with registration MAT3101427724-TP. She set out Friday morning to fish in an open sea area near Isla Mujeres. Alberto Campillo, Fabrizio Cámara Pérez and Rómulo Calzada Fernández are three of the missing crew members from Tabasco.

Also on board is another fishermen from Cuidad del Carmen, Campeche (name not known) and the boat’s captain from Isla Mujeres (name not known). The name of fifth crew member, also reported to be from Tabasco, is not known.

A search was started Saturday morning after the Harbor Master’s Office in Quintana Roo was notified. The Navy has also joined in the efforts to locate the vessel.

UPDATE: The five crew and captain of Jigging were located late Saturday alive and well. Their boat was found during an air search 81 nautical miles (150 kilometers) from Isla Mujeres in the Gulf of Mexico

In a brief note, the Government of Quintana Roo wrote “Safe and sound, the six crew members of a boat lost at sea! After an intense joint air and sea operation between the Navy, the Citizen Security Secretariat of Quintana Roo, the Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo, the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Quintana Roo and the great collaboration of civil society, a group of people reported lost at sea have been located and rescued.

“The five passengers and one crew member of the boat, originally from Tabasco, were located and are currently receiving hydration and medical attention. The preliminary report is that they are in good health. The authorities are transferring them to land to integrate them with their families.”
